Blue's Clues and YOUR Musical Adventure!

In our Blue's Big City Adventure: Music & Dance Party! game, Blue and Rainbow Puppy love creating different genres of music in various parts of New York City. And now, they’re inviting you and your child to take off on your own musical adventure. Encourage your child to grab their favorite instrument (or make their own) for a scavenger hunt around your own city or neighborhood – or even at home!

What They'll Learn

Children will explore music and their neighborhoods or cities using instruments or everyday materials.

Let’s Play!

  1. Make a list of places to visit in your neighborhood or community. Need ideas? In New York City, Blue and Rainbow Puppy visit Central Park, a garden, a subway station, a city street, and the boardwalk. In your neighborhood, you might explore a grocery store, library, playground, the sidewalk, or a bus station!
  2. Bring the list, their favorite instrument (see below for everyday items you can use as instruments), and embark on your adventure.
  3. As you stop at each place, take a note of any music you might hear.
    • Do you hear music coming from a car?
    • Is a neighbor playing an instrument from their house?
    • Don’t forget, music doesn’t have to be from an instrument. Are the birds singing in the park? What about the sounds of your steps as you walk?
  4. Then, play your instrument in each of the places you visit! Experiment with tempo and sound. If you’re at a busier place, like the playground, play your instrument more quickly or loudly. If it’s a quieter place, such as a garden, play your instrument softly or at a slower tempo.

Parent Tips

You can play this activity at home too! Help your child to draw or cut out pictures of different places, then tape them up around your home. Their bookshelf could become the library; the dining room a restaurant; the hallway could be a subway or bus station!

No instrument? No problem! Try one of these crafty ideas.

  • Find objects in the kitchen to use as musical instruments. Pots, pans, or tupperware can be used as drums; pan covers can be used as cymbals!
  • Make and shake a maraca!
  • Use your voice to sing songs.
  • Strike a chord with a make-it-yourself tissue box guitar.
