Shape Math into Art

Shape Math
into Art

Show your little learner that math can be creative with this geometric collage art project!

Learning Goal

Children will use shapes to make a collage.

Help your child cut out a variety of shapes (i.e., rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, triangle, circle) in different sizes and colors.

Give your little artist a blank piece of paper, and encourage them to glue different pieces on it to create a collage!

Parent Tips

Ask your child questions as they create their collage.

For inspiration, read this book about artist Henri Matisse with your child!

Shape Definitions

Parallelogram

A parallelogram is a shape that has 4 corners that do not all have to be the same. It has 4 straight sides – the sides opposite each other are the same size and parallel, which means they never touch (just like train tracks!).

Rectangle

A rectangle is a shape that has four corners that are all the same and four straight sides. The sides opposite each other are the same size and parallel, which means they never touch (just like train tracks!).

Rhombus

A rhombus is a shape that has four straight sides that are all the same (or equal) and four corners that do not all have to be the same.

Triangle

A triangle is a shape that has three straight sides and three corners.

Circle

A circle is a shape made out of a curved line; it’s round!

Oval

An oval is a shape made out of a curved line and shaped like an egg.
