About

Ruby Bridges

When Ruby was little, there was a rule that said that Black people and white people could not go to the same school. Some people understood that the rule was not fair, so they changed it.

Ruby was just 6 years old when she became the first Black child in the South to go to a school with all white children. She was brave; many white people did not want her to go to their school.

Even though Ruby went to the same school as white children, she was placed in a class by herself, and not with white children. This made Ruby sad; she wanted to have class, eat lunch, and play with other kids.

After Ruby went to the all white school, more Black and white kids started going to school together. A 6-year old helped make the world a kinder and fairer place!

Ruby is still a hero and activist! She uses her voice to speak up about treating others fairly.

About

Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall was a Black lawyer who made it so that Black children and white children should not have to go to separate schools.

Thurgood became a judge—someone who listens to people’s opinions about an argument and makes a decision about who is right.

The President asked him to be one of the 9 judges on the Supreme Court—the highest court in the country. He was the first Black judge on the Supreme Court and worked very hard to make sure that all people, no matter the color of their skin, followed the same rules and were treated fairly.
