Katherine Johnson
Katherine Johnson was a famous Black woman who worked for NASA as a mathematician. She solved math problems that helped NASA send astronauts to space and to the Moon and back.
When she was a young girl, Katherine loved math and loved to count. She counted everything! She also loved geometry—this is math that uses lines and shapes.
The first astronaut to fly around the Earth would not go until Katherine checked the math and said it would be safe.

Guion Stewart Bluford Jr.
Guion Bluford is famous for being the first Black American to go into space.
Guy, as his friends called him, was a pilot and an engineer in the Air Force before he became an astronaut. He was a very good pilot and earned a lot of medals for his flying.
Guy worked really hard and was very smart—there were 10,000 people who wanted to be an astronaut when he did, and he was 1 of only 35 picked!
He spent more than 688 hours in space—that’s almost a whole month in space!
