From the time children are very young, they can recognize differences between people. Talking about these differences early and often teaches children that differences are OKAY—and should be celebrated!
Here are some simple, everyday ways to bring different cultures into your child’s world:
- Look at and read books together that show characters who are different from your child. They may speak a different language, have different colored skin, or celebrate different holidays.
- Check out new spaces and settings. If your neighborhood playground seems to be filled with children and families that are similar to you, visit new spaces where your child can meet and make friends with children from different races, cultures, and social groups.
- Consider what they’re watching. While it is important for your child to see themself reflected in the characters they see on TV, it is also important to expose them to characters who may be different from them. Check out new shows, games, and other forms of media that highlight characters of cultures different from your own.
- Look within your circle. Surround yourself and your family with a diverse set of friends.
- Encourage questions. If your child asks a question about why someone else is different, take it as an opportunity to begin a conversation. Children are naturally curious and trying to learn about the world around them!
