Pop-Up Menu

It’s time to open a pop-up family restaurant – and your child is head chef! Help them plan and create a menu by drawing pictures and symbols, including letters and words.

Learning Goal

Children will draw or write as a way to explain their thoughts and ideas.

Make the Menu

  1. Your child can use anything to create the menu: paper, chalkboard, whiteboard, poster board, or cardboard.
  2. Ask your child to pick three of their favorite foods, then help them create their menu! Your little chef can write words, letters, or draw their dish options.
  3. Decorate the rest of the menu together. Encourage your child draw and color a picture or write the name of the restaurant using any art supplies, including crayons, markers, pencils, or paint. If your child needs inspiration, ask them questions:

  • What is the restaurant called?
  • What does it look like inside?
  • What kind of food is served?

Parent Tips

  1. If your child needs inspiration on menu items, encourage them to consider foods from your family’s culture (do you love tamales?), regular favorites they take to school or daycare (how about a sandwich?), or weekend treats (maybe pizza!).
  2. Don’t worry if your child doesn’t spell words correctly, but feel free to help if they ask for assistance.
  3. Help your child understand that it doesn’t matter how they represent the foods – words, letters, and drawings all have meaning to others! Drawing and writing are both ways to communicate our thoughts and ideas.

Play!

The restaurant is open for business! Invite a sibling, grown-up, or friend to visit the new restaurant and order off the menu. Pretend to serve lunch to everyone – or enjoy a real meal together!
